Crushing the Head of the Serpent

In search of the truth of who crushes the head of the serpent in Gen 3:15

A small controversy developed recently in a Bible Study class I participate in. It was on the book of Genesis Chapter 3 verse 15. Depending on your translation, it may refer to an offspring of the women crushing the head of Satan in either the feminine, masculine, or a neutral persona. Let’s examine the words from several translations.

“I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.” Douay-Reims

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition

“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”KJV

αὐτός σου τηρήσει κεφαλήν (“he will watch your head”) Greek Septuagint

ipsa conteret caput tuum (“she will crush your head”) Latin Vulgate

ipsum conteret caput tuum (“it will crush your head”) Nova Vulgata (1979)

In the Bible Study we follow the Companion Bible, which uses the authorized version of 1611 (KJV). There are notes and appendixes added by Bullinger in the early twentieth century. Bullinger’s notes for 3:15 state:

15. It, i.e. Christ. The corruption of this in the Vulgate into “she” lies at the root of Mariolatry: the verb in sing. masc. shows that zer’a (seed) is here to be taken in singular, with Sept, i.e. Christ

Companion Bible

I’ll be the first to confess I’m not a linguist or student of the Hebrew or Greek but I do question why the KJV said “it shall bruise” if, according to Bullinger, “the sing. masc.” shows it to be Christ. If the KJV translators were as studious as Bullinger, why would they not have changed the translation from “it” to “he”? They must have felt there was some room for doubt on whether it was masculine or feminine or that it might be more than 1 person crushing the head of the serpent.

Did Mary Crush the Serpent’s Head?

by Mark Giszczak

Bullinger also makes an assertion that the Latin Vulgate included the word she for this part of the sentence and the use of that somehow implies Mariolatry for those who translated the Latin Vulgate. After all the Greek Septuagint uses the masculine pronoun. Since the Douay-Reims includes the reference to “she” it must be somehow linked to the Vulgate. As a Catholic when I read that from a Protestant translator I know that there is a serious misunderstanding about the Roman Catholic church teaching on Mary. I have to wonder whether Bullinger himself was a fallible or infallible man? Could he have made a mistake on his interpretation? On his assertion that it was Mariolatry? Needless to say I wanted to know the real truth behind why the word she was put in the Latin Vulgate and subsequently in the Douay-Reims.

Another bible resource I use is the Didache with commentaries based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The commentary they have for this verse is as follows:

3:15 In this verse, called the Protoevangelium (“First Gospel”), God promised that the offspring of the women would defeat Satan. Christians see this promise fulfilled in Mary and her Son, Jesus Christ, whose Death on the Cross and Resurrection conquered sin and death. For this reason, Christ and His Mother are referred to as the New Adam and New Eve. Mention of the bruising of the heel represents the pain and suffering imparted by the Devil on humanity; the crushed head signifies a mortal wound that would be delivered by Christ, which would vanquish Satan and the forces of evil for those who accept Christ and His teachings. As seen repeatedly throughout salvation history, God is able to bring good out of evil. The Exsultet during the Mass of Easter Vigil intones, “O truly necessary sin of Adam, destroyed completely by the Death of Christ! O happy fault that earned so great, so glorious a Redeemer. (CCC 55, 70, 407-412, 489)

Didache with Commentaries from the CCC

And there you have the Catholic church teaching it is Christ that crushes the head of the serpent. Which still begs the question, “Why did the Vulgate and Douay-Reims both use the word she?” The Vulgate was the translation used for over 1,500 years. Why did God allow it to be wrong, if it was wrong, for such a long time. The KJV was produced in the late 16th century or about 600 years ago. If the Vulgate might have been corrupted by a bias like Bullinger asserts, might also could the KJV be corrupt by a bias in the other direction? Is it possible in those situations where the manuscript indicates it could be one or the other, could a personal bias by the translator remove the possibility for either/or and just “clear it up” by their fallible interpretation.

In his article on this subject, Mark Giszczak, discusses the Greek and Hebrew texts. He points out that “in Greek, the masculine pronoun autos is used even though the antecedent (spermatos, seed) is neuter. It seems that the masculine is preferred here by the translator because the seed/offspring of Eve would presumably be a person, not a thing. The Nova Vulgata uses ipsum, a neuter pronoun referring to a neuter noun (seed, semen). But St. Jerome’s Vulgate is the outlier here, reading ipsa, which here is the feminine nominative singular (not the nom/acc neuter plural) and the Douay-Rheims version is based on the Vulgate.”

A good homily was given on June 6, 2022. June 6 is the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. In his homily Fr. Peter discusses that aspect of Mariolatry referred to as Mary Worship as a Godess. As he states, Catholics don’t worship Mary, they worship her Son. In his homily Fr. Peter uses three terms: Latria, Hyperdulia, and Dulia.

Dulia and Hyperdulia: Do Catholics Really Worship Mary?

https://www.ncregister.com/blog/dulia-hyperdulia-and-mary

It is certainly a complex topic covering thousands of years and many interpretations from those who claim to listen to the Holy Spirit in their interpretation. How can the Holy Spirit tell it one way to one group and a completely different way to another group of very faithful Christians?

Not satisfied with any of the answers so far I decide to go on a quest for more information about the time period and people for the translations: the KJV, Douay-Reims, and Vulgate.

Dr. Taylor Marshall writes about this topic in his article on taylormarshall.com.

Who Crushes Satan’s Head in Genesis 3:15? (Mary or Jesus?) by Dr Taylor Marshall

He first points out the rather obvious fact that “it doesn’t much matter since either reading is orthodox and true. Christ crushes the head of Satan absolutely, and Mary crushes the head of Satan by virtue of her role as the Mother of God and New Eve.”

He also talks about roles of Mary in “the ‘she shall crush’ reading supports the Catholic argument that Mary’s role as Mother of God makes her Mediatrix and her role as New Eve makes her Coredemptrix.”

Those two roles will be important from a Catholic prophecy perspective since the church will receive great blessings from God as soon as the fifth Marian dogma is established. As the church goes, so goes society. Great blessings will be abundant across all nations when this happens.

The Fifth Marian Dogma: Unused Weapon Of the Church

Dr. Marshall searches for the truth in the old Hebrew manuscripts. Unfortunately, even the Hebrew manuscripts are not all in unison on the language of this verse. Is God just playing a mind game with us throughout the years on this one? Or is there some divine purpose to always bring up both the feminine and masculine in the interpretation of this verse.

Dr. Marshall then discusses reasons to believe the “she” is the correct interpretation. He identifies three Jewish witnesses on the interpretation of this verse: Philo Judaeus, Josephus the roman historian, and Moses Maimonides, the great medieval Jewish philosopher.

As in all investigative adventures, a new trail is established and now I need to know what each of these said, and when.

The site newadvent.org claims to be a Catholic Encyclopedia of the old texts.

Mary prophesied in the Old Testament

https://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15464b.htm

The reading “she” (ipsa) is neither an intentional corruption of the original text, nor is it an accidental error; it is rather an explanatory version expressing explicitly the fact of Our Lady’s part in the victory over the serpent, which is contained implicitly in the Hebrew original. The strength of the Christian tradition as to Mary’s share in this victory may be inferred from the retention of “she” in St. Jerome’s version in spite of his acquaintance with the original text and with the reading “he” (ipse) in the old Latin version.

https://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15464b.htm

And so it is that St. Jerome is a key player who believed “She” was the correct interpretation. St. Jerome was born about the year 340-342. And he is given this understanding from reading the Hebrew and Latin. It is also noted here that “no author had such influence on the upbuilding of ecclesiastical Latin as St. Jerome had. His contribution came mainly along the lines of literary Latin. From his master, Donatus, he had received a grammatical instruction that made him the most literary and learned of the Fathers, and he always retained a love for correct diction”

If, as Bullinger points out, this is rooted in Mariolatry, it is likely St. Jerome would be the target of the accusation. Yet, from all the records of St. Jerome, he was a true scholar of the written word and “He prized good writing so highly that he grew angry whenever he was accused of a solecism.” Is it possible he let his emotions overtake him and lead him to error? It seems highly unlikely.

The Latin Vulgate which St. Jerome reviewed and updated was the source text for all others for over 1,500 years. Which is more time than any modern translation can claim. St. Jerome also had a love for accuracy and would be horrified if he misquoted something or, indirectly, was leading people to error based on his translation of the source texts.

This brings us full circle back to asking if God is bringing this up during these times to bring the church to realize the true role He wants Mary, the Mother of God, the God Bearer, the Theotokos to play in the salvation plan. No, she is not a redeemer, only Jesus redeems us through His sacrifice. But, she did have a role to play in saying “Yes” to God’s plan for bringing His Son into the world as that sacrifice. She in no way is an equal redeemer, but through her intercession, she brings others to the true Redeemer.

Our Lady of All Nations – Our Lady of America

As I start this weeks Catholic Study Session I am reminded of the words of the ex-Satanist, Zachary King, who ended up with a wake up call with the Mother of Jesus. As he held a Miraculous Medal like what we discussed last week, something miraculous happened. Listen to his explanation in his video at the Spiritual First Responders conference in November 2020.

In it he admits he was a Satanist and grew up as a Baptist. As a Baptist he never knew anything about Jesus’ Mother. At about the 7:00 minute marker of the video he says “Mary gave birth to Jesus. What else did Mary do? Nothing. You know how many titles she has? None. Do you know what her name is? Mary.” So when a Catholic said the Blessed Mother wants him in Her army, he wondered if she was referring to ISIS.

In these two of the Modern Marian Apparitions, Our Lady comes with two very unique titles; Our Lady of All Nations and Our Lady of America.

Month of Mary – Session 1

In this series of studies for the month of May we will focus on Marian topics.  The first topic will be a high level overview of the:

Modern Marian Apparitions
“to the World”
1830–2030

The modern Marian apparitions start in 1830 in Paris France. Specifically at 140 Rue de Bac in Paris France. In this first of the modern Marian apparitions, Mary reveals a medal to be struck. Although commonly referred to as the Miraculous Medal, it started as the Immaculate Conception medal. The inscription read “O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” It would not be for another 24 years before the church would actually approve the Marian Dogma, but yet, here a simple religious sister is given part of the plan that God wishes to reveal at this time. It was only after so many miracles were recorded surrounding people with a devotion to the medal that it became commonly referred to as the Miraculous Medal.

The Immaculate Conception Medal

The Miraculous Medal

https://usralls.org/the-miraculous-medal/

So many blessings were given as a result of this single apparition, but these apparitions are not meant to be individual events but each is a piece of the puzzle of a larger plan.

After my consecration to Jesus through Mary in 2018, within a few months I was introduced to two organizations that are on the forefront of heralding in a new time for the church. One organization was the Marian Movement of Priests. If you look at the apparition guide that was in 1973 that Fr. Stefano Gobbi started receiving messages from the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. There is a Blue Book written that includes the messages he received during the 20th century. The other organization was started by a religious sister, Sister Anne, who was a Carmelite of 33 years. Sister Anne was inspired by Mary to promote the rule as described to Melanie at LaSalette in 1846. Sister Anne introduces you to her website with a video at https://houseofmaryomd.org/welcome/start-here .

At the House of Mary OMD website you can read in the Rue de Bac section how Sister Anne believes that Mary’s apparitions form a mosaic and not a checkerboard.

I strongly contend that Mary’s apparitions form a mosaic and not a checkerboard. When some Catholics hear of a newly approved Marian apparition, they are often content with that soundbite: Mary appeared in Akita, Japan. Mary appeared in Rwanda. Mary appeared in Argentina. Period. End of news. They aren’t interested in details because they assume that Mary is just saying the same “old” black and white message—pray and do penance—around the world.

Sister Anne of Yaheweh

She contends that just like the books of the Bible combine together into a single book of God’s loving plan to bring a savior to humanity, so too do these modern Marian apparitions, when viewed as a whole, have threads of truth that weave in and out to reveal another part of that same plan. In these last times, God the Father is allowing His Daughter, God the Spirit His spouse, and God the Son His Mother, to reveal to the prophets what is about to transpire.

Surely the Lord God does nothing, without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets.

AMOS 3:7

As we look over the high level theme of each of the modern apparitions since 1830, we see themes present like devotions, Marian Dogmas, hope, encouragement, conversion, praying the Rosary, communism, chastisement, the anti-christ, and an era of peace through the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart.

The Promises of Divine Mercy

Updated 7th April 2021, this Sunday, April 11th, is Divine Mercy Sunday. It’s a time that Jesus has promised to extend His Divine Mercy to all people. It is available to all Christians and not just Catholics. So what are the graces offered by Jesus on Divine Mercy Sunday?

How did Divine Mercy come to be placed on the liturgical calendar? In St. Faustina diary she records that Jesus told her explicitly that He wanted Divine Mercy Sunday to be placed on the calendar the Sunday after Resurrection Sunday or Easter.

17 Things Jesus Revealed to St. Faustina About Divine Mercy
https://www.ncregister.com/blog/joseph-pronechen/what-jesus-says-about-divine-mercy

The greater the sinner, the greater the right he has to My mercy. My mercy is confirmed in every work of My hands. He who trusts in My mercy will not perish, for all his affairs are Mine, and his enemies will be shattered at the base of My footstool.

Jesus to Sr. Faustina, Diary 723

I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My mercy.

Jesus to Sr. Faustina, Diary 1109

I demand the worship of My mercy through the solemn celebration of the Feast and through the veneration of the image which is painted. By means of this image I shall grant many graces to souls. It is to be a reminder of the demands of My mercy, because even the strongest faith is of no avail without works.

Jesus to Sr. Faustina, Diary 742

I want the image solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it.

Jesus to Sr. Faustina, Diary 341

“Sister Faustina was a young, uneducated nun in a convent of the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Poland during the 1930s.  She came from a poor family that struggled during the years of World War I.  She had only three years of simple education, so hers were the humblest tasks in the convent, usually in the kitchen or garden.  However, she received extraordinary revelations — or messages — from our Lord Jesus.  Jesus asked Sr. Faustina to record these experiences, which she compiled into notebooks.  These notebooks are known today as the Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska, and the words contained within are God’s loving message of Divine Mercy.”

Sister Faustina died at the age of 33.

The History of Christmas

This PragerU video on The Amazing History of Christmas was the spark to this week’s study session.

In this session we’ll review a few of the prominent traditions celebrated around the world at this time and explore in depth the hidden mysteries of Christ’s birthday from an astrological and geological perspective.

How much do you know about Christmas—about its origins and its many beloved traditions? Do you know where the idea of stocking-stuffers comes from? Or how lights found their way onto the Christmas tree? Or why we all have the jolly, red-suited, white-haired image of Santa Claus in our heads? In this video, historian William Federer explores the holiday’s rich and unique history.

Saint Nicholas, Sinterklaas, Santa Claus

In the PragerU video it talked about St. Nicholas who is also known as Santa Claus. Yes, it is true that Santa Claus is for real. It’s not a myth and not a heresy to let children know about the good works of this saintly fellow. Santa Claus lived the faith as described in Matt 5:16.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 5:16

The real history behind this Bishop of Myra can best be found at https://www.stnicholascenter.org/who-is-st-nicholas

One interesting tidbit from this history is that St. Nicholas was present during the council that met in Nicaea in the year of our Lord 325.

Away in a Manger

As the Christmas Carol goes “Away in a manger no crib for His bed.” But what do we really know about the little manger scene and could this have even been accurate given the place of His birth in Bethlehem?

Two mystics of the Church include Blessed Catherine Anne Emerich and Mary of Agreda. Both of these mystics were provided visions of the venture that Mary and Joseph had as they traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem on that first Christmas.

https://ia800808.us.archive.org/23/items/TheCityOfGod1913/TheCityOfGod1913.pdf

Let us read from Book Iv of Chapter IX in the City of God

Thus variously and wonderfully assisted, our Travelers arrived at the town of Bethlehem at four o’clock on the fifth day, a Saturday.- While wandering through the streets they passed the office of the public registry and there inscribed their names and paid the fiscal tribute in order to comply with the edict and not be obliged to return. They continued their search, betaking themselves to other houses. But having already applied at more than fifty different places, they found themselves rejected and sent away from them all.

It was nine o’clock at night, when the most faithful Joseph, full of bitter and heartrending sorrow, returned to his most prudent Spouse and said: “My sweetest Lady, no doubt heaven, in thus allowing the hearts of men to be so unmoved as to refuse us a night-lodging, conceals some mystery.

I now remember, Lady, that outside the city walls there is a cave, which serves as a shelter for shepherds and their flocks. Let us seek it out; perhaps it is unoccupied, and we may there expect some assistance from heaven, since we receive none from men on earth.” The most prudent Virgin answered: “My spouse and my master, let not thy kindest heart be afflicted, because the ardent wishes which the love of thy Lord excites in thee, cannot be fulfilled. Let us go gladly wherever the Lord shall guide us.” The holy angels accompanied the heavenly pair, brilliantly lighting up the way, and when they arrived at the city gate, they saw that the cave was forsaken and unoccupied.

The City of God, Book 4, Chapter 9

The cave was more in the form of a grotto and a traditional pilgrimage site for Christians everywhere. The Church of the Nativity was built later above the grotto. What does Mary of Agreda record about the birth and first resting plAce for the child Jesus?

While saint Joseph handed Her the wrappings and swaddling-clothes, which She had brought, She clothed Him with incomparable reverence, devotion and tenderness. Having thus swathed and clothed Him, his Mother, with heavenly wisdom, laid Him in the crib, as related by saint Luke. For this purpose She had arranged some straw and hay upon a stone in order to prepare for the Godman his first resting-place upon earth next to that which he had found in her arms.

The City of God, Book 4, Chapter 9

By contrast, the writings of Blessed Anne Catherine Emerich record the travel into Bethlehem and birth of our Lord in “From the Nativity of the Virgin Mary to the death of patriarch Saint Joseph – Part 5 ” at this site. It gives some reason why Joseph felt it was certain he would find room in the inn.

A short distance outside the city, about a quarter of an hour’s walk brought them to a large building surrounded by courtyards and smaller houses. There were trees in front of it, and all sorts of people encamped in tents around it. This house was once the paternal home of Joseph, and ages before it had been the family mansion of David. It was at this period used as the custom house of the Roman taxes. Joseph still had in the city a brother, who was an innkeeper. He was not his own brother, but a stepbrother.

From the Nativity of the Virgin Mary to the death of patriarch Saint Joseph – Part 5

Imagine his dissappointment when his own kinsmen would not provide any form of shelter for a women about to give birth. Eventually they reach the cave which is described by Emerich as

At last, they reached a hill before which stood trees, firs, pines, or cedars, and trees with small leaves like the box tree. In this hill was the cave or vault spoken of by Joseph. There were no houses around. One side of the cave was built up with rough masonry through which the open entrance of the shepherds led down into the valley. Joseph opened the light wicker door and, as they entered, the she-ass ran to meet them. She had left them near Joseph’s paternal house, and had run around the city to this cave. She frolicked around and leaped gaily about them, so that Mary said: “Behold! It is surely God’s will that we should be here.” But Joseph was worried and, in secret, a little ashamed, because he had so often alluded to the good reception they would meet in Bethlehem.

From the Nativity of the Virgin Mary to the death of patriarch Saint Joseph – Part 5

And she records the final hour when Christ is born.

It was five o’clock in the evening when Joseph brought Mary back again to the Crib Cave. He hung up several more lamps, and made a place under the shed before the door for the little she-ass, which came joyfully hurrying from the fields to meet them. When Mary told Joseph that her time was drawing near and that he should now betake himself to prayer, he left her and turned toward his sleeping place to do her bidding. Before entering his little recess, he looked back once toward that part of the cave where Mary knelt upon her couch in prayer, her back to him, her face toward the east. He saw the cave filled with the light that streamed from Mary, for she was entirely enveloped as if by flames. It was as if he were, like Moses, looking into the burning bush. He sank prostrate to the ground in prayer, and looked not back again. The glory around Mary became brighter and brighter, the lamps that Joseph had lit were no longer to be seen. Mary knelt, her flowing white robe spread out before her. At the twelfth hour, her prayer became ecstatic, and I saw her raised so far above the ground that one could see it beneath her. Her hands were crossed upon her breast, and the light around her grew even more resplendent.

I no longer saw the roof of the cave. Above Mary stretched a pathway of light up to Heaven, in which pathway it seemed as if one light came forth from another, as if one figure dissolved into another, and from these different spheres of light other heavenly figures issued. Mary continued in prayer, her eyes bent low upon the ground. At that moment she gave birth to the Infant Jesus. I saw Him like a tiny, shining Child, lying on the rug at her knees, and brighter far than all the other brilliancy.

She lifted the Child, along with the cover that she had thrown over It, to her breast and sat veiled, herself and Child quite enveloped. It may, perhaps, have been an hour after the birth when Mary called St. Joseph, who still lay prostrate in prayer. She laid the Child in the Crib, which had been filled with rushes and fine moss over which was spread a cover that hung down at the sides. The Crib stood over the stone trough. The floor of this part of the cave lay somewhat deeper than where the Child was born, and down to it steps had been formed in the earth. When Mary laid the Child in the Crib, both she and Joseph stood by It in tears, singing the praises of God.

From the Nativity of the Virgin Mary to the death of patriarch Saint Joseph – Part 5

St. Joseph was a carpenter by trade and it seems only logical that he would have fashioned some form of a crib from wood that was found in the grotto. And from the descriptions we can see that there was hay or moss with some sort of cover or swaddling cloth over it to let the baby rest upon. Whether a trough of stone or trough of wood it was a manger that was likely also used to the feed the animals.

The Bethlehem Star

Just this last week we witnessed a celestial event that also played out at the time of Jesus’ birth. The celestial event was the retrograde pattern of Saturn and Jupiter that appear to the human eye as if those two planets become a single star in the night sky that is brighter than any other.

The Origin of Christmas Carols

Do you know the origin of your favorite Christmas Carol? Here are a few of my favorite:

O Come, All Ye Faithful

“O Come, All Ye Faithful”, originally known as “Adeste Fidelas” in Latin, is well-known Christmas carol with disputed origins. The most popular English version of the song was written in 1841 by the English Catholic priest Frederick Oakeley. The original Latin song has been credited to several people including John IV of Portugal in the early to mid-17th century, John Reading in the late 17th century, and John Francis Wade in the mid-18th century. Wade’s version is the one used today and was first published in Cantus Diversi in 1751. A copy of Wade’s original manuscript is housed by Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, England.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel

The original writer of this haunting hymn remains unknown, but the most widely acknowledged guess is a simple monk or nun. In the early 19th century, an Anglican priest named John Mason Neale was reading an ancient book of poetry and hymns and dusted off this unknown Latin poem, which was complete with music accompaniment.

Neale knew 20 languages, including Latin, and was able to translate this song into English. He lived in the Madeira islands near Africa, where he had established an orphanage, a school for girls, and a ministry to reclaim prostitutes. Neale first played this hymn for the people he served, thought to be the lowest of society. The hymn has remained in popular rotation ever since.

The 12 Days of Christmas

From the year 1558 to 1829 Catholics in England were prohibited by law from the practice of their Faith. The religion was officially illegal until Parliament finally enacted the Catholic Emancipation Act in 1829. Until then it was a crime to be a Catholic and to be faithful to the pope.

The 12 Days of Christmas’ was written as one of the ‘catechetical songs’ to help young Catholics learn the tenets of their faith. It was a memory aid, when to be caught with anything Popish would not only get you imprisoned, but possibly hanged, shortened by a head, or even subjected to the awful ordeal of being hanged, drawn and quartered.

The gifts referred to in the song are in fact coded references to the teachings of the Catholic faith. The ‘true love’ mentioned is God himself. The ‘me’ who receives the presents refers to every baptized person. The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and the tree is the tree of the cross.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Charles Wesley originally wrote this poem to be recited on Christmas Day, but it wasn’t the version we know today. The original was ten four-line verses, and instead of singing “Glory to the newborn King,” the line was, “Glory to the King of kings.”

That line was changed by George Whitfield, a student of Wesley’s, and he was also the one who eliminated the verses we no longer sing and who made the ones we do sing longer. (The line change to “newborn King” from “King of kings” was a controversial statement at the time; the former claims that the angels praised God the Father when Jesus was born, the latter claims Jesus himself was praised. This caused a riff between the men.)

Nonetheless, this hymn remains one of the most theologically rich carols we still sing, and music was later added by Felix Mendelssohn.

The False Prophet

Our Catholic Study Session this week focuses on false prophets in general and The False Prophet from the book of Revelation.

Let us start our session with the sign of the faith.

This last week I ran across an article by Fr. Frank Unterhalt is a German diocesan priest. He recently wrote an article for LifeSite laying out the many prophesies and visions made by Catholic saints and mystics regarding the end times. These saints and mystics include Sr. Lucia from Fatima, Padre Pio, Bishop Fulton Sheen, Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, and Melanie from LaSalette among others.

The article from LifeSite news is here.

The first beast of the Apocalypse, which represents freemasonry, is personified in the antichrist, and the second, which represents ecclesiastical freemasonry, in the false prophet.

Cardinal Burke had a very appropriate summary of our times and discusses very briefly the False Prophet in this homily during the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Cardinal Burke: Forces of the ‘Great Reset’ have used COVID to advance ‘evil agenda’

In the approved apparition of LaSalette, Mother Mary said this to Melanie about the time of the Antichrist:

So it will be around the time when the Antichrist is born of a Jewish religious woman, a false virgin who will be in league with the old serpent, the master of fornication. His father will be a bishop. When he is born he will spit blasphemy; he will have teeth; in a word, this one is the devil incarnate. He will break out into a terrible scream; he will work miracles, he will only feed on fornication. He will have brothers who, although not devils incarnate like him, are children of evil. By the age of twelve they will be distinguished by the brilliant victories they have achieved. Soon each of them will be at the head of an army, supported by legions of Hell. The seasons will change. The earth will only produce bad fruit; the stars will leave their regular orbits. The moon will only reproduce a faint reddish light. Water and fire will cause terrible earthquakes and great tremors on earth, which will sink mountains and cities.

It was right after this quote that she said

Rome will lose faith and become the seat of the Antichrist. The demons of the air will work great miracles with the Antichrist on the earth and in the air, and people will get worse and worse. God will provide for His faithful servants and people of good will.

We discussed in our Land Beast post about how the Land Beast teaches things other than the true teachings of Jesus and as such can be considered a false prophet. What else has Mother Mary had to say to Fr. Gobbi about the false prophet(s)?

I have announced to you many times that the end of the times and the coming of Jesus in glory is very near. Now, I want to help you understand the signs described in the Holy Scriptures, which indicate that his glorious return is now close. These signs are clearly indicated in the Gospels, in the letters of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, and they are becoming a reality during these years.

 — The first sign is the spread of errors, which lead to the loss of faith and to apostasy. These errors are being propagated by false teachers, by renowned theologians who are no longer teaching the truths of the Gospel, but pernicious heresies based on errors and on human reasonings. It is because of the teaching of these errors that the true faith is being lost and that the great apostasy is spreading everywhere. (Mt 24:4-5, 11; 2 Thes 2:3; 2 Pt 2:1-3)

Marian Movement of Priests
To My Beloved Sons, Message #485 The End of the Times, December 31, 1992

Mother Mary also spoke of how the Daily Sacrifice is the Daily Mass in this same message.

 — The fourth sign is the horrible sacrilege, perpetrated by him who sets himself against Christ, that is, the Antichrist. He will enter into the holy temple of God and will sit on his throne and have himself adored as God.  (2 Thes 2:4,9-10; Mt 24:15)

Beloved children, in order to understand in what this horrible sacrilege consists, read what has been predicted by the prophet Daniel.  (Dn 12:9-12)

The Holy Mass is the daily Sacrifice, the pure oblation which is offered to the Lord everywhere, from the rising of the sun to its going down.

The Sacrifice of the Mass renews that which was accomplished by Jesus on Calvary. By accepting the Protestant doctrine, people will hold that the Mass is not a sacrifice but only a sacred meal, that is to say, a remembrance of that which Jesus did at his Last Supper. And thus, the celebration of Holy Mass will be suppressed. In this abolition of the daily Sacrifice consists the horrible sacrilege accomplished by the Antichrist, which will last about three and a half years, namely, one thousand two hundred and ninety days.

Marian Movement of Priests
To My Beloved Sons, Message #485 The End of the Times, December 31, 1992

Mother Mary finishes the message with “My beloved ones and children consecrated to my Immaculate Heart, I have wanted to teach you about these signs, which Jesus has pointed out to you in his Gospel, in order to prepare you for the end of the times, because these are about to take place in your days.”

Mark of the Sea Beast

Our Catholic Study Session this week focuses on the Mark of the Sea Beast. To help understand scripture I refer to the beast from the sea that starts chapter 13 as the Sea Beast. It’s also discussed in the Blue Book as the Black Beast. As we continue in chapter 13 after the first beast, the beast that arises from the sea, we read of another beast. One that arises from the earth. I will call that the Land Beast. With that in mind, here is the scripture from chapter 13 with clarification of which beast is being discussed:

Then I saw another beast[, Land Beast,] which rose out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. It exercises all the authority of the first beast[, Sea Beast,] in its presence, and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast[, Sea Beast], whose mortal wound was healed. It[, Land Beast,] works great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in the sight of men; and by the signs which it[, Land Beast,] is allowed to work in the presence of the beast[, Sea Beast], it[, Land Beast] deceives those who dwell on earth, bidding them make an image for the beast[, Sea Beast,] which was wounded by the sword and yet lived; and it[, Land Beast] was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast[, Sea Beast,] so that the image of the beast[, Sea Beast,] should even speak, and to cause those who would not worship the image of the beast[, Sea Beast,] to be slain. Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast[, Sea Beast] or the number of its name.

Revelation 13:11-17

In case you haven’t read the previous post, the insight there is going to be very needed as we tackle the discussion about the mark of the Sea Beast.

“Sister Anne” discusses the Mark of the Beast in the post on her website with a reference to the video below.

One essential tool “Sister Anne” has with most of her posts is the transcript with the video. I will be pulling snippets from her post and will italicize and highlight in the majestic color of gold to give credit to the her study and her website as the source of most of my understanding of the book of Revelation imagery and actors. She also discusses the significance of 666 that Mother Mary shared with Fr. Gobbi and I would recommend reviewing at least the first half of her video above as we continue in our discussion. “Sister Anne” opens with “There are some people, perhaps not a few, who attend Bible study classes on the Apocalypse because it’s a fun challenge to try to discover the meaning of all the symbols. It can’t be argued that it’s a great story embedded in a big puzzle. It’s fun to work a puzzle.”

What a great way to view Revelation. So much abstraction that treating each abstract as a piece of the puzzle gives you a method to attack the completion of the overall picture. By unveiling the meaning behind each piece and identifying adjoining pieces you start seeing the picture become familiar.

Some people attend Bible study classes on the Apocalypse because it’s a fun challenge to try to discover the meaning of the symbols. Today it seems that an entire generation of frogs sitting in a pot of water that’s been heating up incrementally. Scarcely anyone realizes that they are in imminent danger of being scalded to death. Mary wants us to be on our guard. The main feature of this Apocalyptic era is “deception.” Mary wants you to see yourself as personally engaged, like Jesus was, in this valiant contest.
Beginning through 27:45

On November 12th, 2020, the Marian Movement of Priests held a prayer cenacle that discussed message #406 (The Beast like a Lamb), June 13th, 1989.

38:55 through 48:40

And so what do we already know about chapter 13 from the previous posts:

The Sea Beast and the Land Beast, I saw a beast rising out of the sea, Book of Revelation – 7 Churches

Pieces of the puzzle:

Sea Beast – Freemasonry.
Land Beast – Ecclesiastical Freemasonry.
Great Red Dragon – Figuratively Communism.
Dragon – Literally, “ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world.” Satan works through the actions of Communist and Marxist nations.

With that understanding let’s review what Mother Mary has said about the Mark of the [Sea Beast] in message #410 (The Mark on the Forehead and on the Hand), September 8, 1989.

These are the times when the followers of him who opposes himself to Christ are being signed with his mark on the forehead and on the hand.

The mark on the forehead and on the hand is an expression of a total dependency on the part of those who are designated by this sign. The sign indicates him who is an enemy of Christ, that is to say, the sign of the Antichrist. And his mark, which is stamped, signifies the complete belonging of the person thus marked to the army of him who is opposed to Christ and who fights against his divine and royal dominion.

The mark is imprinted on the forehead and on the hand.

The forehead indicates the intellect, because the mind is the seat of the human reason.

The hand expresses human activity, because it is with his hands that man acts and works.

Nevertheless it is the person who is marked with the mark of the Antichrist in his intellect and in his will.

He who allows himself to be signed with the mark on his forehead is led to accept the doctrine of the denial of God, of the rejection of his Law, and of atheism which, in these times, is more and more diffused and advertised. And thus he is driven to follow the ideologies in mode today and to make of himself a propagator of all the errors.

He who allows himself to be signed with the mark on his hand is obliged to act in an autonomous manner and independently of God, ordering his own activities to the quest of a purely material and terrestrial good. Thus he withdraws his action from the design of the Father, who wants to illumine it and sustain it by his divine providence, from the love of the Son who makes human toil a precious means for one’s own redemption and sanctification, from the power of the Spirit who acts everywhere to renew interiorly every creature.

He who is signed with the mark on his hand works for himself alone, to accumulate material goods, to make money his god, and he becomes a victim of materialism.

He who is signed with the mark on his hand works solely for the gratification of his own senses, for the quest of well-being and pleasure, for the granting of full satisfaction to all his passions, especially that of impurity, and he becomes a victim of hedonism.

He who is signed with the mark on his hand makes of his own self the center of all his actions, looks upon others as objects to be used and to be exploited for his own advantage, and he becomes a victim of unbridled egoism and of lovelessness.

Message #410d-n
The Mark on the Forehead and on the Hand – September 8, 1989

We see that Mother Mary indicates the mark is more abstract than physical. It’s what’s in your heart and mind that matters. It’s what you support that matters. If you have a heart for worship of Jesus, you will resist any movement from the anti-Church, from Ecclesiastical Masonry, to deny Him that worship. If you believe Jesus is not just a way, but THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE, then you will not receive the mark of the Sea Beast.

Mother Mary also had this to say in that same message about being sealed with the sign of Christ:

If my Adversary is signing, with his mark, all his followers, the time has come when I also, your heavenly Leader, am signing, with my motherly seal, all those who have consecrated themselves to my Immaculate Heart and have formed part of my army.

I am imprinting my seal on your foreheads with the most holy sign of the Cross of my Son Jesus. Thus I am opening the human intellect to receive his divine word, to love it, and to live it. I am leading you to entrust yourselves completely to Jesus who has revealed it to you. And I am making of you today courageous witnesses of faith. Against those signed on the forehead with the blasphemous mark, I am opposing my children signed with the Cross of Jesus Christ.

And then I am directing all your activity to the perfect glorification of the Most Holy Trinity. For this, I am imprinting upon your hands my seal which is the sign of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. With the sign of the Father, your human activity becomes directed towards a perfect cooperation with the plans of his divine providence, which still today arranges all things for your good. With the sign of the Son, all your actions become profoundly inserted into the mystery of his divine redemption. With the sign of the Holy Spirit, everything you do becomes open to his powerful force for sanctification, which breathes everywhere like a powerful fire, to renew from its foundations the whole world.

My beloved children, allow yourselves all to be signed on the forehead and on the hand with my motherly seal…

Message #410o-r
The Mark on the Forehead and on the Hand – September 8, 1989

Father Cortese said in the cenacle that Mother Mary is the General leading this battle to defeat Satan. How humiliating it is for the great satan to be removed by such a humble women. If the devil was defeated by Jesus himself, that would not be humiliating since he would be defeated by the Son of God. But to be defeated by a mere women, is disgraceful. But then again, Mother Mary is no mere women. She is the daughter of God, the mother of the Son, and the spouse of the Holy Spirit. No other man or women in history even comes close to those credentials. Ave Maria!!

Q&A

Can you explain when Masonry or Freemasonry might have suffered a mortal wound?

What does the Land Beast represent?

How does the Land Beast lead unknowing participants along a path counter to God?

What is the difference between the mark and the seal?

I saw a beast rising out of the sea

In my previous post “The Sea Beast and the Land Beast” I talked very briefly about the Sea Beast, the beast rising out of the sea. The description in Revelation contains so much more and it’s time to unpack the mysteries of the heads, horns, diadems, and blasphemous names written on the heads.

And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems upon its horns and a blasphemous name upon its heads.

Revelation 13:1

Why should Christians be concerned about this beast? Because that is the beast that is allowed to make war with Christians, to conquer them, and to kill them.

Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and tongue and nation, and all who dwell on earth will worship it, every one whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that was slain.

Revelation 13:7-8

The beast is so powerful that all those whose name IS NOT written in the book of life will worship it? Men worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?” Rev 13:4

If you are interested in making sure your name is written in the book of life, take heed. If you are interested in making sure you DO NOT worship the beast (or the dragon), take heed. Understand this beast above all others in Revelation.

Virgen_del_Apocalipsis_-_Miguel_Cabrera
I am the Virgin of Revelation. In me, the masterpiece of the Father is realized in such a perfect manner, that He can shed on me the light of his predilection. The Word assumes his human nature in my virginal womb, and thus can come to you by means of my true function as Mother.

To My Beloved Sons, message 198, April 24, 1980

The Holy Spirit draws me, like a magnet, into the depths of the life of love between the Father and the Son, and I become interiorly transformed and so assimilated to Him as to be his Spouse.

I will bring you to the full understanding of Sacred Scripture. Above all, I will read to you the pages of its last book, which you are living. In it, everything is already predicted, even that which must still come to pass. The battle to which I am calling you is clearly described, and my great victory is foretold. For this reason, I repeat: do not fear; have confidence! In my Immaculate Heart, you will experience the joy and the peace that, even today, my risen Son gives to all of you.

To My Beloved Sons, message 198, April 24, 1980

What did the “Virgin of Revelation” tell Fr. Gobbi about the beast that rose out of the sea? In message 405 she explains with the care of a mother and the confidence that the victory is already foretold.

In 1917 Our Lady of the Rosary at Fatima said “in the end my Immaculate Heart with triumph.” In message 405 to Fr. Gobbi she says “my Immaculate Heart becomes today the sign of my sure victory, in the great struggle which is being fought out between the followers of the huge Red Dragon and the followers of the Woman Clothed with the Sun.” message 405b

“In this terrible struggle, there comes up from the sea, to the aid of the Dragon, a beast like a leopard.” message 405c

To Fr. Gobbi on June 3, 1989,Our Lady continues, “If the Red Dragon is Marxist atheism, the Black Beast is Freemasonry. The Dragon manifests himself in the force of his power; the Black Beast, on the other hand, acts in the shadow, keeps out of sight and hides himself in such a way as to enter in everywhere. He has the claws of a bear and the mouth of a lion, because he works everywhere with cunning and with the means of social communication, that is to say, through propaganda.”message 405c

It is very sobering to reflect on the fact that in 1989 we were told that the social communication would become the propaganda of our times. With Fake News leading the charge towards a great schism in the USA, is it no wonder so many are deceived. Even the church today is going through the struggles of a great schism, even greater than the schism of 1517 where a German monk took 9M from the church and led them into heresy.

For false Christs and false prophets will arise and show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

Matthew 24:24

From what happened in 1517 we can see that a false prophet arose from within the ranks of the church to lead astray even the elect, if that were possible. Are those that followed that German monk part of the elect?

Yet, I digress, back to the Black Beast and Freemasonry… What are the characteristics of the Black Beast, the beast that arises from the sea?

And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems upon its horns and a blasphemous name upon its heads.

Rev 13:1

Are the ten horns, ten diadems and seven heads important? Are those symbols used in anyway to pull the children of God away from the true faith? The number seven is significant in the bible because it represents completion. God created all things in seven days. In message 405 to Fr. Gobbi, Our Lady reveals the meaning of the seven heads, “the seven heads indicate the various masonic lodges, which act everywhere in a subtle and dangerous way.”

She also explains the ten horns in this way. “Masonry rules and governs throughout the whole world by means of the ten horns. The horn, in the biblical world, has always been an instrument of amplification, a way of making one’s voice better heard, a strong means of communication.” Is it possible that many if not most of today’s media sources are ruled by Freemasons?

How high in the Catholic hierarchy are Freemasons? One person reached the pinnacle of Freemasonry by being elected the Grand Master. He describes how his life changed and he began following Jesus Christ to the Catholic Church in his podcast series here. He, above all other Catholics, understands Freemasonry and has done extensive research into those in the Catholic ranks who promote the ideals of Freemasonry.

He wrote a piece recently on why Pope Francis could be considered the “THE FREEMASON’S POPE” ?

And what did Our Lady say about the “blasphemous name upon its heads”?

The aim of Masonry is not to deny God, but to blaspheme Him. The Beast opens his mouth to utter blasphemies against God, to blaspheme his name and his dwelling place, and against all those who dwell in heaven. The greatest blasphemy is that of denying the worship due to God alone by giving it to creatures and to Satan himself.

To My Beloved Sons, message 405, June 3, 1989

The error of humanism is that it places onto the creature the worship due to God alone. Compassion is important and all are expected to abide by the corporal works of mercy. But the concern for the compassion of others could lead you to believe that it is more important make people feel comfortable about where they believe they are in their journey with Christ rather than helping to instruct them by providing slight corrections known as “admonishing the sinner” which is one of the seven spiritual works of mercy. Even worse would be to teach Catholics they do not need to attend Sunday Mass but watching in their homes is all Christ wants or is expecting. Christ expects us to hunger for Him above our own lives, and to receive “our daily bread,” the Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith. Humanism places concern for the creature above concern for the worship of God.

Mother Mary continues in message 405 by discussing the ten horns in contrast with God’s ten commandments.

If the Lord has communicated his Law with the Ten Commandments, Freemasonry spreads everywhere, through the power of its ten horns, a law which is completely opposed to that of God.

To the commandment of the Lord: ‘You shall not have any other gods but me,’ it builds other false idols, before which many today prostrate themselves in adoration.

To the commandment: ‘You shall not take the name of God in vain,’ it sets itself up in opposition by blaspheming God and his Christ, in many subtle and diabolical ways, even to reducing his Name indecorously to the level of a brand-name of an object of sale and of producing sacrilegious films concerning his life and his divine Person.

To the commandment: ‘Remember to keep holy the Sabbath Day,’it transforms the Sunday into a weekend, into a day of sports, of competitions and of entertainments.

To the commandment: ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ it opposes a new model of family based on cohabitation, even between homosexuals.

To the commandment: ‘You shall not kill,’ it has succeeded in making abortion legal everywhere, in making euthanasia acceptable, and in causing respect due to the value of human life all but disappear.

To the commandment: ‘You shall not commit impure acts,’ it justifies, exalts and propagates every form of impurity, even to the justification of acts against nature.

To the commandment: ‘You shall not steal,’ it works to the end that theft, violence, kidnapping and robbery spread more and more.

To the commandment: ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ it acts in such a way that the law of deceit, lying and duplicity becomes more and more propagated.

To the commandment: ‘You shall not covet the goods and the wife of another,’ it works to corrupt in the depths of the conscience, betraying the mind and the heart of man.

In this way souls become driven along the perverse and wicked road of disobedience to the laws of the Lord, become submerged in sin and are thus prevented from receiving the gift of grace and of the life of God.

To My Beloved Sons, message 405, June 3, 1989

How much truer today are these words than when they were spoken in 1989? Have we seen recently where people “prostrate themselves in adoration” to false idols like Mother Earth, aka Pachamama? Have we heard people using God’s name as an exclamation as their favorite team scores a touch down or using “oh my” before God’s name as if it should be used improperly and without grace. Have we seen a new family model being setup based on cohabitation or accepting unions even between homosexuals? Have we seen more Catholics vote in 2020 for a candidate who openly supports abortion for any reason, restricting religious liberties from organizations like the Little Sisters of the Poor, and aiding the most aggressive communist country ever known, aka China? And they did that to the demise of the one leader who has fought more aggressively for pro-life issues than any other in the past 20 years.

It does appear the Sea Beast (the Black Beast) in cooperation with the huge Red Dragon, are winning the current battle between the dragon and the women clothed in the sun.

Message 405 to Fr. Gobbi is one of the longest because Mother Mary had much to cover. After describing the ten horns and the assault on the ten commandments by Freemasons, She then describes the “blasphemous name upon” the seven heads by describing the seven virtues and Freemasons seven capital vices.

To the seven theological and cardinal virtues, which are the fruit of living in the grace of God, Freemasonry counters with the diffusion of the seven capital vices, which are the fruit of living habitually in the state of sin. To faith it opposes pride; to hope, lust; to charity, avarice; to prudence, anger; to fortitude, sloth; to justice, envy; to temperance, gluttony.

Whoever becomes a victim of the seven capital vices is gradually led to take away the worship that is due to God alone, in order to give it to false divinities, who are the very personification of all these vices. And in this consists the greatest and most horrible blasphemy. This is why on every head of the Beast there is written a blasphemous name. Each masonic lodge has the task of making a different divinity adored.

The first head bears the blasphemous name of pride, which opposes itself to the virtue of faith and leads one to offer worship to the god of human reason and haughtiness, of technology and progress.

The second head bears the blasphemous name of lust, which opposes itself to the virtue of hope and brings one to offer worship to the god of sexuality and of impurity.

The third head bears the blasphemous name of avarice, which opposes itself to the virtue of charity and spreads everywhere the worship of the god of money.

The fourth head bears the blasphemous name of anger, which opposes itself to the virtue of prudence and leads one to offer worship to the god of discord and division.

The fifth head bears the blasphemous name of sloth, which opposes itself to the virtue of fortitude and disseminates the worship of the idol of fear, of public opinion and of exploitation.

The sixth head bears the blasphemous name of envy, which opposes itself to the virtue of justice and leads one to offer worship to the idol of violence and of war.

The seventh head bears the blasphemous name of gluttony, which opposes itself to the virtue of temperance and leads one to offer worship to the so highly extolled idol of hedonism, of materialism and of pleasure.

Again, it does appear the Sea Beast (the Black Beast) in cooperation with the huge Red Dragon, are winning the current battle between the dragon and the women clothed in the sun.

Mother Mary concludes her message to Fr. Gobbi with hope and the assurance that victory is imminent.

Now you understand how, in these times, against the terrible and insidious attack of the Black Beast, namely of Masonry, my Immaculate Heart becomes your refuge and the sure road which brings you to God. In my Immaculate Heart there is delineated the tactic made use of by your heavenly Mother, to fight back against and to defeat the subtle plot made use of by the Black Beast.

For this reason I am training all my children to observe the Ten Commandments of God; to live the Gospel to the letter; to make frequent use of the sacraments, especially those of Penance and Eucharistic Communion, as necessary helps in order to remain in the grace of God; to practice the virtues vigorously; to walk always along the path of goodness, of love, of purity and of holiness.

Thus I am making use of you, my little children who have consecrated yourselves to me, to unmask all these subtle snares which the Black Beast sets for you and to make futile in the end the great attack which Masonry has launched today against Christ and his Church. And in the end, especially in his greatest defeat, there will appear in all its splendor, the triumph of my Immaculate Heart in the world.

To My Beloved Sons, message 405, June 3, 1989

For those wanting to research further the consecration to Jesus, through Mary, may want to purchase the book by Fr. Gaitley, The 33 days to Morning Glory. Or listen to what St. Maximilian Kolbe defined in his 9 day devotion.

With this knowledge about the details of the beast that arose from the sea, we can now move on to what the Mark of the Beast represents. If the beast is Freemasonry, what could the mark on the hand or forehead represent?

Come back in a short while for that discussion.

Book of Revelation – 7 Churches

Today’s reading is from the book of Revelation chapter 4 and discusses the heavenly worship in the throne room of heaven.

https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/111820.cfm

This heavenly discourse comes with a description that clearly identifies 24 other thrones and the “elders” that sit on those thrones and bow in worship “before the one who sits on the throne.”

We hear of the creatures who exalt the one who sits on the throne. “Day and night they do not stop exclaiming: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come.”” And when the 24 elders throw down their crowns before the throne they exclaim “Worthy are you, Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things; because of your will they came to be and were created.”

These words are not unfamiliar for Catholics because most of this discourse is exclaimed at mass each day, but do we really know which person of the trinity is being discussed sitting on the throne?

Given this description, who is this “Lord God almighty?” Is it God the Father, God the Son, or God the Holy Spirit?

Wouldn’t it be great if all symbology in the Book of Revelation were this clear? But, yet, just two chapters before we have the description about the 7 churches; “to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Per′gamum and to Thyati′ra and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to La-odice′a.”Rev 1:11

First mystery is why is there only 7 churches? Surely there were more churches by this time. During Mass today it was said the 7 represents the whole church. And in other bible study references it is commonly agreed that the number 7 represent completion. God finished his work of creation in 7 days. God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it.Gen 2:2-3 The walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. Heb 11:30

And the Blessed Virgin Mary left Fr. Gobbi with many messages where she specifically wanted to unveil the mysteries of that last book because she believed they would be living through those times. In the Blue Book the only message about the 7 churches is in message 390.

390 — To the Angels of the Churches (Madrid (Spain); September 29, 1988
390a-“Beloved sons, . . . you have come from every part of Spain. . .
390d-This country of yours . . . is penetrated with a secularism which has particularly stricken the life of many priests and many religious. It has been lacerated by a deep interior division. It has been stricken in its pastors who, for fear of exposing themselves to criticisms, are remaining
silent and are no longer defending the flock which Christ has entrusted to them.
390e-To you, who are the angels of the Churches, I address today the sorrowful reproach of my motherly Heart, for your lack of faith, of zeal, of prayer and of holiness. The Lord is about to ask you for an account of how you have managed his vineyard and why you have permitted rapacious wolves to enter into it, disguised as lambs, in order to devour a downtrodden and dispersed flock.
390g-Entrust yourselves to the protection of your guardian angels . . .
390h-And in the end you will all be able to form part of the victorious army, guided by your heavenly Leader, the Woman clothed with the sun . ..

As we had read before, the Blessed Virgin Mary came to Fr. Gobbi to unveil the mysteries in the book of Revelation. What mystery does she unveil in this only message about the 7 churches?

She talks about the angels of the churches in reference to the entire body of priests that were present in Madrid Spain. But, in a diocese we know there is only one voice for that diocese and it is the bishop. And so the bishop would be considered the star, the Angel of that church as referenced in Rev 1:20. “As for the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.” Mary also discusses Spain as one of those churches even though it is not listed in chapter 1. “Sister Anne” describes the a possible meaning of those 7 churches, the complete church, in her revelation series at https://houseofmaryomd.org/eschatology/apocalypse/mary-unveils-the-apocalypse .

“Sister Anne” has an interpretation like no other. That is that a grouping of sevens is obviously present in Revelation. And to go even further, she believes there are 7 groups of seven. But, even with the groups of 7, the first church referenced is in a way in common with the first seal and the first trumpet, and the first …

Next week we will not meet in person, but a FlockNote will be sent going into more detail on this topic.

Thank you everyone who participated this evening.

Our Lady of the Rosary

This week in our Catholic Study Sessions we will do an in depth research on the origins of the Rosary. We will also look into one of the most important battles where the success of it was attributed specifically to Our Lady of the Rosary. We will complete with the poem that G. K. Chesterton wrote about that battle.

In 1214, Our Lady said “Dear Dominic, do you know which weapon the Blessed Trinity wants to use to reform the world?” After his reply she said “I want you to know that, in this kind of warfare, the principal weapon has always been the Angelic Psalter, which is the foundation-stone of the New Testament. Therefore, if you want to reach these hardened souls and win them over to God, preach my Psalter.” 3

What is the Angelic Psalter? Well, there are 150 psalms that were commonly recited as a devotion daily by many monks! And the Hail Mary prayer back then was referenced as the Angelic Salutation, as the words, “Hail Mary” are the first words that the angel Gabriel speaks. And so, the Angelic Psalter is the 150 Hail Mary prayers that made up the Rosary, complete with the meditations of Christ.3

From this we can see that the Rosary handed on to St. Dominic was a lay version of the 150 psalms recited by the monks during that time. Of the fifteen events of the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries there are 150 Hail Mary’s. As a lay person, which is more likely: reciting 153 Hail Marys, 5 Our Fathers and the Profession of Faith or reciting all the psalms between the Book of Job and Proverbs?

And so St. Dominic did exactly as was requested. He preached and spread the devotion of the Angelic Psalter. And the rest is history. The Albigensians are no more, but to this day, many of us still pray the Rosary devoutly.3

In Crossing the Threshold of Hope, St. John Paul II wrote, “Thanks to St. Louis de Montfort, I came to understand that true devotion to the Mother of God is actually Christocentric, indeed, it is very profoundly rooted in the mystery of the Blessed Trinity, and the mysteries of the Incarnation and Redemption.” 2

St. Louis de Montfort wrote “If priests and religious have an obligation to meditate on the great truths of our holy religion in order to live up to their vocation worthily, the same obligation, then, is just as much incumbent upon the laity — because of the fact that every day they meet with spiritual dangers which might make them lose their souls. Therefore they should arm themselves with the frequent meditation on the life, virtues and sufferings of Our Blessed Lord — which are so beautifully contained in the 15 mysteries of the Holy Rosary.” 2

So far we’ve only discussed the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries. But for those who say the Angelic Psalter on a daily basis, they know on Thursday we say the Luminous Mysteries. Since Our Lady of the Rosary never mentioned the Luminous Mysteries to St. Dominic, where did they come from and when?

The answer to that question can be found at the https://www.theholyrosary.org. It says “The Blessed Holy Father John Paul II on October 16th, 2002 with the Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae on the Most Holy Rosary has added 5 new mysteries of the Rosary: The Mysteries of the Light.” It goes on to say “The word Rosary means “Crown of Roses”. Our Lady has revealed to several people that each time they say a Hail Mary they are giving her a beautiful rose and that each complete Rosary makes her a crown of roses.”

But, the devotion given to St. Dominic was called the Angelic Psalter. When did they start calling it the Holy Rosary and why?

The very well-known book De Dignitate Psalterii, by Blessed Alan de la Roche, documents how St. Dominic received the vision from Our Lady of the Rosary. The  Angelic Psalter was also called the Psalter of Jesus and Mary because the mysteries all focused on events in Jesus and Mary’s life.

St. Dominic preached the Psalter with fervor and that fervor spread for a century and then that holy zeal left the priests and laity. But in 1349, God punished the whole of Europe with the most terrible plague that had ever been known. It was followed by a tragic schism in 1376. Later on, by God’s glory, our Lady told Blessed Alan to revive the Psalter. 4

One day when Blessed Alan de la Roche was offering Mass, our Lord, spoke to him in the Sacred Host. “How can you crucify me again so soon?” Jesus said. “What did you say, Lord?” asked Blessed Alan, horrified. “You crucified me once before by your sins,” answered Jesus, “and I would willingly be crucified again rather than have my Father offended by the sins you used to commit. You are crucifying me again now because you have all the learning and understanding that you need to preach my Mother’s Rosary, and you are not doing it. If you only did that, you could teach many souls the right path and lead them away from sin. But you are not doing it, and so you yourself are guilty of the sins that they commit.”4

Ever since Blessed Alan de la Roche re-established this devotion, the voice of the people, which is the voice of God, gave it the name of the Rosary, which means “crown of roses.” That is to say that every time people say the Rosary devoutly they place on the heads of Jesus and Mary 153 white roses and sixteen red roses. Being heavenly flowers, these roses will never fade or lose their beauty. 4

Our Lady has approved and confirmed this name of the Rosary; she has revealed to several people that each time they say a Hail Mary they are giving her a beautiful rose, and that each complete Rosary makes her a crown of roses. 4

So the complete Rosary is a large crown of roses and each chaplet of five decades is a little wreath of flowers or a little crown of heavenly roses which we place on the heads of Jesus and Mary.

Adding the Fatima prayer

The Rosary concludes a decade of Hail Mary’s with “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.” Actually though, there is a passage in Walsh’s “Our Lady of Fatima,” published in 1947, in a transcript of an interview with Sister Lucia, which gives the prayer in English as, “Oh my Jesus, pardon us, and save us from the fires of hell. Draw all souls to heaven, especially those most in need.” 5 The modified version with ‘of thy mercy’ is the most common and recited by Catholics throughout the globe.
